Rajmao Pukhuri

It is the largest pond of Jorhat. This historical pond is situated  in Krishna kanta Handique Road, near Jorhat Planetarium and in front of Jorhat Indoor Stadium.
People come for morning and evening walk in the walking trails around the pond. The surrounding of the pond filled with lots of trees, and It also has some  sitting  areas and benches made of concrete.Where people came to take rest and enjoy some natural moments.

The history of Rajmao Pukhuri and it's other name :


In the year 1816, Ahom king Swargadeo Chandrakanta Singha's mother Rajmao Numoli Kuwari ordered to built a pond in Jorhat, The pond was honored in the name of Hindu God Vishnu.Therefore it was known as Vishnu Sagar in the earlier days.
But over the years the name of queen mother became associated with it and name got changed as what it is known today- "Rajmao Pukhuri".

A popular myth about Rajmao Pukhuri is:
"There is a golden boat under the pond."
This is just a myth people used to tell to the kids.

Mitha Pukhuri - the story behind the name

Mitha Pukhuri, we all know the famous pond of the city Jorhat. But do you know the funny story behind its name ? I bet you don't. So here is the story, During the 1800 century, some people from Kohima (Nagaland ) came to visit Jorhat. During their visit, they ate some Amlokhi (Indian gooseberry) from the local amlokhi tree and then had water from the pond. And eventually they found the water very sweet, and hence they named it as Mitha Pukhuri. Mitha means sweet in Assamese and Pukhuri means Pond.
