Gar ali

Gar Ali is the heart of our city Jorhat. You can also call it "the time square of Jorhat". Everybody just love to walk in the most famous and busy street of the city.

The street where you can find everything, like cloths, cinema , shopping malls, restaurants , street food etc.



During the festive time, specially in Durga Puja & Dewali, the street turns into a massive Puja mandap. Entry of vehicles (cars/bikes) prohibited in Gar ali during the puja days. People from all over the district came to Gar ali to celebrate and visit the all the puja mandaps near the street.

Well that is the part most people from Jorhat or ever been to Jorhat know already. But do you know the history of Gar Ali ? We guess you don't.

So here is the terrific historical story of Gar Ali :

Gar Ali used to be a kind of defense site which is known as "garh" in Assamese language. This site was built during the war between the Ahoms and the Moamarias in order to protect the Ahom Kingdom from any external threat.
At that time Gar Ali was also known as the Bbuddhi Garh, the site is dotted with several confusing pathways which were made to distract the enemies trying to enter the embankment. Extending from Seoni Ali to Naga Hills.

That is the historic important of our Gar-Ali.
