Jagannath Barooah Yes, he was the one, Jagannath Barooah was the first graduate from upper Assam. In the year 1872 Jagannath Barooah completed Batchelor of Arts (BA) degree from Presidency College of Kolkata and became the first graduate of upper Assam. Therefore he was also known as BA Jagannath Barooah. Jagannath Barooah was born on 29 October 1851 in Jorhat. His father Hemdhar Barooah was also a very respectful person of Jorhat. After completing his degree, he appeared for Civil services but later he changed his mind and started tea cultivation. And in a very short period of time , he became owner of several tea gardens like Lekujan, Bosabari etc. Later, in the year 1902 the British honoured him with the title "Raibahadur" for his excellent work for the tea industry .
