Jagannath Barooah Yes, he was the one, Jagannath Barooah was the first graduate from upper Assam. In the year 1872 Jagannath Barooah completed Batchelor of Arts (BA) degree from Presidency College of Kolkata and became the first graduate of upper Assam. Therefore he was also known as BA Jagannath Barooah. Jagannath Barooah was born on 29 October 1851 in Jorhat. His father Hemdhar Barooah was also a very respectful person of Jorhat. After completing his degree,  he appeared for Civil services but later he changed his mind and started tea cultivation. Gar ali Gar Ali is the heart of our city Jorhat. You can also call it "the time square of Jorhat". Everybody just love to walk in the most famous and busy street of the city. The street where you can find everything, like cloths, cinema , shopping malls, restaurants , street food etc. During the festive time, specially in Durga Puja & Dewali, the street turns into a massive Puja mandap. Entry of vehicles (cars/bikes) prohibited in Gar ali during the puja days. People from all over the district came to Gar ali to celebrate and visit the all the puja mandaps near the street. Mitha Pukhuri - the story behind the name

Mitha Pukhuri, we all know the famous pond of the city Jorhat. But do you know the funny story behind its name ? I bet you don't. So here is the story, During the 1800 century, some people from Kohima (Nagaland ) came to visit Jorhat. During their visit, they ate some Amlokhi (Indian gooseberry) from the local amlokhi tree and then had water from the pond. And eventually they found the water very sweet, and hence they named it as Mitha Pukhuri. Mitha means sweet in Assamese and Pukhuri means Pond.
